The survey stats reveal that almost half of Black single mothers feel they’ve had to choose between their children and a romantic partner. Additionally, a significant majority of Black single mothers believe that society judges them more harshly than single fathers. While the majority of Black single moms feel confident in who they are and what they bring to the table and that being a single mom has not affected their emotional well-being, the majority of Gen Z Black single mothers sometimes doubt themselves and worry about their desirability due to their parental status. The three obstacles Black single mothers face most when it comes to dating are finding understanding and compatible partners, limited free time, and overcoming negative stereotypes associated with single moms.

SURVEY RESULTS

·       44% of BLK moms felt like they’ve had to choose between their children and a romantic partner.

·       79% of Black single mothers feel that society judges single mothers more harshly than single fathers.

·       Overall, the majority of Black single mothers (56%) feel confident in who they are, what they bring to the table, and being a single mom has not affected their emotional well-being. However, the majority (63%) of Gen Z Black single moms (18-24) sometimes doubt themselves and worry that they’re not desirable because of their parental status.

·       The Top 3 obstacles Black single mothers face when it comes to dating are – finding understanding and compatible partners, having limited free time, and overcoming negative stereotypes associated with single moms.

10 THINGS NOT TO SAY TO A SINGLE MOTHER

1.     “I’m here for you, but that’s not my child.”

2.     “I want to give you another son.”

3.     “Just ask someone to keep them. It’s not that hard to find a sitter.”

4.     “Can I meet your kid(s)?”

5.     “Do they all have the same father?”

6.     “When we have OUR kids…” 

7.     Mentioning anything about being a stepdad as a joke.

8.     “I don’t like kids.”

9.     Referring to her as ‘baby mama’

10.  ANYTHING about the child’s father
